5 Things to keep your Baby’s Skin Soft and Safe

Nothing can beat the surge of  joy upon seeing the smile of a blissful baby !

As mothers we try to take the best possible care of our babies,to keep them healthy and happy .Today I shall share a few baby care tips to ensure that your baby has a healthy skin .

The most common dermatological conditions that babies present in our clinics are Prickly heat, Eczema, Diaper rash ,dry scaly skin etc .So I shall share a few guidelines that can help in keeping these from appearing or managing the existing common skin problems in babies .

1. How to avoid and manage a Diaper Rash

An irritating , reddish discoloration in the diaper area of the baby’s body is called  a diaper or nappy rash . Most diaper rashes occur because of skin irritation due to diapers that are too tight; wet diapers left on for too long ,or an allergy to a particular brand of detergent, diapers, or baby wipes. It can be avoided  by keeping the diaper area open to the air as much as possible and changing the  diaper as soon as it gets wet.

If the baby  does get a diaper rash then it should be washed with a warm cloth, and a zinc oxide cream can be applied to soothe the area .The homoeopathic ointment calendula can also be applied .

2. Laundry Tips to avoid Baby Skin problems: Use a gentle detergent to wash everything that touches your infant’s skin, from bedding and blankets, to towels and even your own clothes.This will help in reducing the chances of the baby developing an inflamed skin .

3. Sun Protection for Babies 

The sun may feel great in winters , but the baby’s skin being very delicate, exposing your baby’s skin can give raise to the chances of a sunburn. Hats and umbrellas are  good for babies. But for the best protection from sunburn, keep your infant out of direct and harsh sunlight during the first six months of life.

Apply baby sunscreen to those areas of baby’s skin that can’t be covered by clothes. You can also use zinc oxide lotion on baby’s nose, ears, and lips.

For mild infant sunburn apply a cool cloth to baby’s skin for 10-15 minutes a few times daily. For more severe sunburn, consult your doctor .

4 .Selecting the right  Baby Care Products

While buying baby care  products , look out for items that are free from  dyes, fragrance, phthalates and parabens — all of which could cause skin irritation. If you are unsure of a product, talk to your pediatrician to see if a product is appropriate for your baby’s skin .

5. Baby massage

Massage is an integral part of baby care in our country. It keeps the skin soft and supple and also provides a barrier between allergens, irritants and the baby skin. It aids circulation and helps in improving the muscle tone .Also the touch  helps in better bonding between the baby and the care giver .Use a pure oil like coconut , olive oil or almond oil and after about half an hour , give the baby a bath .

The baby bath in warm water should be restricted to only three to five minutes. Avoid letting your baby sit or play or soak for long in soapy water. Apply a baby lotion or moisturizer immediately after bath while skin is still wet to lock the moisture in  and then pat dry, do not rub.
