In 2015, members of the United Nations declared 17 goals of sustainable development to be achieved by all the members by the year 2030. The right to Happiness and Mental well -being is one of the 17 goals of Sustainable development goals. Today, the 20th March being the International Day of Happiness, let us just take a pause and evaluate how successful we are in our pursuit of happiness and how can we become happier human beings.
We all are in the pursuit of Happiness but it has different meanings for everyone, there is no single definition of Happiness that fits all.
What do you mean by Happiness?
Broadly saying , Happiness can mean
- A feeling of joy and lack of sadness
- Experiencing contentment with your life and life decisions
- The feeling of flourishing and growing as a person
Now that we know what it means to be really happy, here are 5 practical tips that help you win in the pursuit of happiness.
1. Journal your Gratitude
People will feel happier and more fulfilled in life if they take the time to notice and appreciate what they have to be thankful for, even if it is small things. Make it a daily habit, keep a thankfulness journal. You had a good day because a colleague had your back, write it down and keep it etched so that you do not forget the good things happening to you and appreciate the good people do for you.
2. Love actively
Good relationships are essential to happiness. You want to be surrounded by people who love you. So spend time with people you love and attempt to mend any broken connections. Just loving someone is not enough, it is important to show them actively that you love and care. Express your feelings !
What you send out in the universe comes back to you even if in fractions. Send love !
3. Start Networking
Networking not only helps you in your professional arena but also helps in your personal life. Networking is an essential tool in the pursuit of happiness.
A. This process will involve finding your key interests and then finding like-minded people with the same interests.
B. Once you find the right people ,you have to make an effort to meet with these people on a regular basis.
C. When meeting your mates you can start to help each other in solving life’s problems and live healthier lives.
D. You can also donate to or volunteer for a charity that promotes your preferred good acts. Giving back to society makes us feel worthier and happier.
4. Be Social
The use of social media is on the rise. Social media is often portrayed as a a modern day evil. An evil that makes us compare ourselves to others and creates the disease FOMO (fear of missing out – for the uninitiated ).While this may be true in some instances, equally true is the fact that social media is a double edged weapon .Once you know how to use it to your advantage, you can gain happiness through social media. Simply share updates on your your activities, specially the ones that bring you joy. You will be spreading the joy by sharing it with the world. I personally love watching the beautiful nature pictures that other people share on social media. Seeing others succeed at what they are doing gives me motivation to keep pursing my passion fervently.
5. Get Physical
Exercising your muscles will not only give you a healthier body but a happier mind too. So make sure you get your 20 mins of sweating it out everyday. So tone up that body before you run in the pursuit of happiness. To know more about how exercise improves our mental well-being, read my previous post here.
To sum it up , I quote the famous Polymath, Philanthropist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer,
Happiness? That’s nothing more than good health and a poor memory.”
