Every November, men around the world put down their razors and let their facial hair grow wild and free. It’s all part of No Shave November, also called Movember (Moustache+November), a global movement to raise awareness about men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health.
The idea behind No-Shave November is simple: for the entire month of November, men forgo shaving and grooming their facial or body hair in order to spark conversations about important health issues. The money that men typically spend on shaving and grooming is then donated to cancer research and education through charities that support the cause. The sum may seem paltry but when you multiply it by millions it can become a substantial amount.
The first No-Shave November campaign raised over $1,000 for cancer research. Since then, the movement has grown exponentially, raising over $126 million to date.
The Origin of No-Shave November
It all started in 2003 when two Australian Men – Travis Garone and Luke Slattery decided to grow their mustaches. They soon felt it was better if they did it for a cause and thus Movember was born.Movember aimed to raise awareness and money for many health issues affecting Men.Their movement caught on with many men joining in and raising funds.
No-Shave November was started in 2009 by the Matthew Hill Foundation , based in California,USA, to support and focus on cancer awareness, prevention and raise funds for cancer research and cancer treatments. It was created by the surviving members of the Hill Family in memory of their father Mathew Hill, who passed away from advanced Colon Cancer.
Together the two organisations promote this No-shave movement in the month of November.

I’m yet to see men who shirk shaving in November. The cause is good, noble. But the means? I’m not sure. Anyway, I never shave, the month doesn’t matter. Aren’t there better ways than asking women to let their hair grow in all unwanted places for conscientising people about cancer?
Hello. A very valid point regarding health issues whether it be men or women, our personal health and hygiene is important.
Much as the good invaluable advice and support from friends, family and work colleagues, no one can be more responsible for your own health but You. Why would you not look after your self ? How can you self neglect and care for others ? Advise and support everyone like you would do your own.
Growing long hair, beard or moustache, again a personal choice for all.
Hope everyone stays safe and happy.
I truly believe that just like women, mental health awareness for men is also very important and needs attention. But witnessed somewhere or other it fails to get the due importance in the society as there is myth men don’t cry. But I was not aware of the story behind the NO SHAVE November. Thanks for enlightening me with your informative post. Glad to meet Mr. Tric. Keep sharing such informative content as reading them helps us to grow responsibly in the society. I will make sure my husband reads this post. Thanks again for sharing.
Wooooaah! I had no clue there’s something like this. Thanks for this informative post Preeti.
I really like the idea behind Movember but I don’t know how the two are related… I mean I cant see how they fit. Personally, much as I’d like to be a part of such campaigns for a cause I don’t think i can stay without threading for 30 days😛
The ideas behind No shave November is off course good cause. My brother used to follow this for the month of November. I used to tease him. I don’t know whether he knew the reason or not. But yes men’s health awareness is also important. The way they come up for cancer cause is really good.
I never bothered to read about No Shave November, so your post is a good opener. It was good to know that the money went for cancer research. It’s also good to know that they took the lead to raise their own issues.
The concept behind No Shave November is indeed a noble cause. It’s a simple yet effective way to unite people in promoting men’s well-being and fostering a sense of community around these essential health topics. This post is worth sharing with friends.
This is new to me. I hadn’t heard this before. Sounds interesting. I don’t think it has caught up in India, lest we should’ve heard and seen ads about it.
I heard about Movember some ten years ago. A friend from US had come to India and had a moustache and a beard. Before that he was always clean shaven and I was ribbing him about it. Then he told me the reason, and it pleasantly surprised me that there is such a movement for creating awareness about men’s health.
The concept of No Shave November or Movember is really a great idea to think about men’s wellness. Men are the piller of any family and in my family I used to see my dad did all things for us but never cared for himself . When he used to fell little sick he never bothered to visit doctor or never bought new pairs on any occasions like us. So, this cause is really something to think about men and build such healthy awareness.
Never heard of this but what a great idea/cause this was! If I only knew this before November started, I could have joined as well! No shaving legs would be a breather actually, haha…not sure if my hubby would have the same sentiments lying down in bed every night with my hairy legs poking him!haha.
Movember is something not known to me and this serves a very good way for awareness totally liked the post. Cancer awareness is important and ur right many cancers are curable when detected in the earlier stage.
Yes, specially oral cancer , prostate cancer and lung cancer are big killers in India.
Your article on No Shave November brilliantly links facial hair growth with men’s health awareness. It’s a creative way to engage readers in an important cause.
We have been having this movember movement in our offices every year but just can’t relate how does it help in men’s health by not Shaving. It’s an awareness drive understood but I’m sure there are many other ways we can contribute.
Actually overseas, they have charities where the money saved by not shaving or not spent in getting waxing , haircuts etc , was to be donate dto the cancer care cahrities. In India I could not find any such charities active. But at least we can create awareness by making it talking point.
I had heard of No Shave November but I did not know the cause behind it. This is very informative. Thank you for sharing about it. People don’t talk about men’s mental health but it is equally important.
I have men say no shave November but it had such a good intention and meaning cause of supporting cancer. Glad to know. Thanks for this detailed post on no-shave November.
I was aware of Movember since I have been working on events around it for over a decade now. But there needs to be more awareness around the cause. I am sure a lot of men join in without knowing the cause it supports. Thanks was sharing about it.
I’m aware of this interesting campaign and I’m glad so many people contribute to it to make a difference.
