Escape From Kabul – Book Review
Escape From Kabul by Enakshi Sengupta is a real-life survival story based on the dramatic events surrounding the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. The book follows five women connected to the Anglo-American University of Kabul who suddenly find their lives under threat when the city collapses into chaos. All who had been working for the allies were now facing a dire fate at the hands of the Taliban regime.Escape was the only option but it was a daunting task.
The narrative captures their fear, confusion, and struggle for safety as they attempt to escape a situation where every decision could determine their future. For readers looking for books on Afghanistan, true survival stories, or accounts of the Kabul evacuation, this book offers a true and realistic account of what the people experienced during those days.
A Realistic Reading Experience
One of the strongest qualities of Escape From Kabul is its realistic tone. Anjali and four women of different nationalities, who were at the Anglo-American University of Kabul, were forced into hiding, when the Taliban gained control of Kabul. The women are unsure of whom to trust. The events are described with plain honesty, making the reader feel the danger and tension faced by the women. There are moments where the situation changes within minutes. A seemingly safe ride becomes threatening, or a trusted person suddenly behaves in a way that raises hackles.
The book offers a strong emotional impact without exaggeration. It shows how fragile life becomes during political breakdowns. The fear of being identified, the stress of hiding, and the pressure of planning an escape all come through clearly. For anyone researching the Afghanistan Taliban takeover or understanding civilian experiences, this book brings a touching human perspective.

Themes of Courage and Solidarity

An impactful First person account Survival Narrative
Escape From Kabul by Enakshi Sengupta is a thoughtful and gripping account of survival during the Kabul 2021 takeover. Its simple language, realistic tone, and careful research make it suitable for a wide range of readers.
Escape From Kabul focuses only on the journey of these five women. It does not attempt to cover the entire political history of Afghanistan or the complete impact of the Taliban takeover on the population. Readers looking for deep political analysis may find the scope limited.
However, for those who want a personal and direct story that reflects the ground situation faced by many in Kabul in 2021, the book works very well. It introduces the crisis through real people without overwhelming the reader with complex political details.
Whether you are interested in Afghanistan’s recent history, women’s experiences during conflict, or real-life escape stories, this book provides a strong and informative reading experience. It is a meaningful addition to the growing list of non-fiction books that document human courage during times of crisis.

This review just confirmed that I need to move this up my list! It is actually on my TBR right now, and I have decided to buy it as a Christmas gift for myself this year. I am really fascinated by these kinds of intense real-life stories, especially since I have already read quite a lot about the Taliban and the history of that region. Your take on the suspense really makes me look forward to diving into it during the holidays.
Interesting review of Escape From Kabul. It must be a gripping tale, covering how the women must have escaped. The Taliban horror stories are rampant. Women can bond well and chart out their escape.I just steer clear of this genre.
This book reminds me of a Bengali book called Kabuliwalar Bangali Bou (The Bengali Bride of a Kabuliwalla), which was later adapted into the film Escape from Taliban. Sadly, the author Sushmita Banerjee lost her life in a Taliban attack.
This is equally close to that, thankfully the author managed to reach safely.
I would like to read this book. It’s a true story, so it appeals to me, plus how the women used their resources and faculties to escape this life-threatening situation.
Thank you for introducing this book to us. Your review makes me silently applaud the author and the ladies with her. I will be reading this book.
Firstly I was craving for the copy of this book but as usual luck didnt allow and I am yet to read it. But the fact is that there are similar other books which I already read in the same line story… how far is this book different from the previous ones by other authors?
It depends which authors or books you are talking about – this is a real life story of women escaping from Taliban to India , the obstacles and threats they overcome in the process.
Your review makes Escape From Kabul sound like such an intense and deeply human story. Definitely checking it out. Thanks for the rec
Escape From Kabul is a powerful, honest account of survival that avoids sensationalism and instead highlights courage, fear, and solidarity. Enakshi Sengupta’s firsthand experience gives the narrative credibility and emotional depth. It’s a compelling read for anyone seeking a human perspective on the Taliban takeover and its impact on ordinary lives. Brilliant review.
The way the review connects the characters’ emotions to the larger story made me want to read the book. It strikes the right balance between context and narrative.
Interesting. To convert a personal experience into a well-researched story is not easy, and from your review it appears that the author has done a commendable job. Thanks for the recommendation.

Your review brought the women’s harrowing journey to life and made me appreciate their courage and resilience under extreme danger, while your vivid descriptions inspired me to add this powerful survival story to my reading list.
I appreciated how you focused on the women’s fear, solidarity, and quiet courage without sensationalism. It reminded me that survival stories are less about heroics and more about humanity holding on, moment by moment.
