Therefore with the ongoing protests against sexual harassment of female wrestlers, naturally, my thoughts went to the pathbreaking Hindi film “Dangal” which sought to change traditional gender stereotypes.

Dangal is definitely a watch movie, the basic fact that girls are not less than boys is a tag line of this movie. Though city side people have opened up to the equality of girls and boys yet villages still require more such movies to come out of their backward thinking.

Dangal was a game changer because a lot of people identified with it. Fathers and daughters. Has it really made an impact at the rural level – not sure. It would take a lot many more Dangals to do that. There is a foot in the door at least.

Dangal challenged the stereotypes very well. I feel it worked because it showed a man who did not think much of his daughters but realized that they were as good and trained them. No one was perfect or larger than life.
One of the most important aspect of Mahavir Phogat was realising the talent of his daughters and pushing them to train to become wrestlers. Guidance and a changing society, both are crucial. This movie was so motivating for parents as well as young girls.
