“Which are the best sunscreens for oily acne-prone skin?”, is one of the most common questions people ask me as a doctor.

So let me share some tried and tested and also doctor-recommended 5 best sunscreens for acne-prone and oily skin. I have tried to keep it simple and if you have any queries please leave them in the comments section and I shall make sure to revert.

1. Nivea Sun Protect and Moisturize SPF 50 Sunscreen

Best sunscreen for Oily acne prone skin

Nivea is a brand known for gentle and effective skin care. This sunscreen has both UVA and UVB protection and is also moisturizing .So you can skip the moisturizing part after cleansing your skin and apply it directly. It is also waterproof so a good option if you wish to go swimming or sweat a lot.

My take – it leaves my skin somewhat greasy and I have to apply some loose powder on top so I would recommend it to normal or dry skin beauties or to just apply with some face powder like me. It could be a great option for dry weather or if you spend too much time in air conditioning.

Is it effective against tanning – Yes

Did it cause breakouts – No

2. Neutrogena  Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 50

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry touch Sunblock with SPF 50 is suitable for oily acne prone skin and that is why it makes the cut in the 5 best sunscreens for oily acne prone skin. It provides broad spectrum protection against sun damage from both UVA and UVB rays. This sunscreen is sweatproof and waterproof and promises to have a weightless and matte feel. It has a zinc variant that is mineral based and great for sensitive skin but it leaves a white cast and is slightly drying specially if you are using exfoliating acne treatments.

My take – It is not exactly matte but relatively less greasy than the Nivea one above.

This Lotus Herbals  sunscreen is a gel sunscreen and offers both UVA and UVB protection and has PA 3+.This is a truly matte gel and hence one of the best sunscreens for oily acne-prone skin. It sets into a dry finish within 2-3 minutes of application. It has a pleasant green tea fragrance which also is good for acne.

My take -It keeps the skin looking oil free for long while protecting but is not water-proof.

Is it effective against tanning – Yes

Did it cause breakouts – it did not cause breakouts but I felt whenever I was having active acne , it seemed to irritate my skin slightly so I do not recommend this for very sensitive skin or when you are taking exfoliating treatments.

4.Salve Sunprotek 50+ Gel Sunscreen

Dermatologists agree that this is one of the best sunscreens for oily acne-prone skin. It offers broad spectrum sun protection and is also gel based so does not cause much greasiness.

My take – It is not water proof but is sweat proof. It suited me even when I was using exfoliating treatments and special acne creams. It has weaker protection against UVA ( that causes more tanning and skin damage).

This one actually delivers what it promises. Besides dual sun protection, it has balmy matte finish which is soothing and non greasy. The Cica or Centella Asiatica extract and Niacinamide make for a soothing experience. Cica also helps in healing and repairing the skin.

My take – I used it after a peeling treatment for acne scars and it did not cause any irritation. It is colorless and  does not leave any cast either. I really love this one.
