5 Life-Changing Books That Will Transform Your Perspective on Life

Dr. Preeti Chauhan By Dr. Preeti Chauhan November 13, 2024 5 min read

Books have the power to change lives. They challenge our beliefs, broaden our horizons, and offer new ways of understanding the world. Over the years a multitude of books have helped to shape my mindset and inspired me.Today I am sharing five incredible books that have profoundly reshaped my outlook on life, death, meaning, and joy. Each one left an indelible mark on my journey and continues to inspire me. Here’s why these books should be on your reading list and how they can transform your life too.

1.Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

Quote: “Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.”

Mitch Albom’s *Tuesdays with Morrie* is a beautiful memoir about life’s most important lessons. The book chronicles Albom’s conversations with his former sociology professor, Morrie Schwartz, who is battling ALS(Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neurone disease (MND) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that causes progressive loss of muscle function). Over a series of Tuesdays, Morrie imparts timeless wisdom on topics like love, work, family, and forgiveness.

Mitch Albom, an acclaimed author and journalist, uses his personal experience to create a poignant story that will resonate with anyone searching for deeper meaning in life. This book taught me that embracing our mortality helps us live more fully and authentically.

2.The Book of Delights by Ross Gay

Quote: “What you pay attention to grows.”

Ross Gay’s *The Book of Delights* is a collection of 102 short essays, each capturing a moment of joy or wonder. Gay, a poet and professor, wrote these daily reflections over the course of a year, encouraging readers to find beauty in the ordinary. From the pleasure of a high-five to the sweetness of a shared laugh, Gay invites us to pause and appreciate life’s small, fleeting moments.

This book is a masterclass in mindfulness and gratitude. It reminded me that delight is always within reach if we take the time to notice it. Gay’s writing is a powerful antidote to the chaos and busyness of modern life.

3.Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott

Quote: “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

Anne Lamott’s *Bird by Bird* is part writing guide, part life manual. With wit and candor, Lamott offers practical advice on writing while sharing deeper insights into life’s struggles and triumphs. Whether you’re an aspiring writer or someone seeking creative inspiration, Lamott’s voice feels like that of a wise, encouraging friend.

Lamott is known for her honest and humorous take on life’s imperfections. This book taught me the importance of patience, persistence, and self-compassion—both in writing and in life. The title, inspired by her father’s advice to “take it bird by bird,” is a reminder that progress comes one step at a time.

4.Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

Quote: “When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.”

Few books are as profoundly moving as Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning. Frankl, a holocaust survivor and renowned psychiatrist, reflects on his harrowing experiences in Nazi concentration camps. Amidst unimaginable suffering, he discovered that the key to survival lies in finding purpose, even in the face of adversity.

Frankl’s philosophy, known as logotherapy, emphasizes the pursuit of meaning as the central motivator in life. This book challenged me to rethink how I approach hardship and reminded me that even in our darkest moments, we have the power to shape our response. It’s a must-read for anyone seeking resilience and a deeper sense of purpose.

5.When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

Quote: “What makes life meaningful enough to go on living?”

Dr. Paul Kalanithi’s When Breath Becomes Air is a deeply personal and heart-wrenching memoir. As a brilliant neurosurgeon on the cusp of a promising career,at the age of 36 years and a non-smoker, Kalanithi was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Faced with his own mortality, he reflects on what it means to live a meaningful life.

This book offers a unique perspective from someone who had to take on the roles of both doctor and patient. Kalanithi’s writing is poetic and profound, and his insights on identity, purpose, and legacy are both humbling and inspiring. It’s a book that will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.

  1. Read TUESDAY WITH MORRIE and WHEN BREATHE BECOMES AIR, both books offer valuable insights into the secret world of personal reflection and the quest for meaning in modern times.
I recommend the book IT DIDN’T START WITH YOU by MARK WOLYNN

  2. I remember Bird by Bird being recommended by another book blogger (I think it was Harshita) and now you too. And just recently read your review for When Breath Becomes Air. I think I should begin with these two and then check out the others you recommended here because they all seem like necessary reads

  3. Glad to have read about this wonderful compilation by you, Preeti. A friend has been recommending me Man’s Search for Meaning, it’s been long he said but I didn’t find it interesting after reading a few pages. But have a wish to pick that book again someday. I appreciate you for coming with such a wonderful compilation because we do need books like these. I would like to recommend you ‘A Book of Simple Living by Ruskin Bond’. It’s a beautiful book of little things in life.

  4. Tuesdays With Morrie has long been on my list. Now added two more, The Book of Delights and Bird by Bird. In fact, today is the second time, I see the cover of Bird by Bird mentioned as a must read, so that’s deja vu.

  5. I was not expecting to see Bird by Bird in this list but it makes sense. I love that book and everything Anne Lamott says about writing in a way that it’s akin to living.

  6. Tuesday with morrie is my all time favorite. Its kind of ritual for me to read this one on 1 jan every year.

  7. Interesting list of books. I haven’t read any of these, but I have heard a lot about three of them. The quotations are thoughtful. Reading books can change your life, but I can’t think of any book whose content has changed my life.

  8. I have read Tuesdays with Morrie and Bird by Bird and loved them. Indeed as you say books have so much power in helping us. Taking note of The Book of Delights by Ross Gay, I was actually looking for book of essays and this looks perfect.

  9. I’ve read Tuesdays with Morrie and Man’s Search for Meaning, and they left an indelible mark on my perspective about life and its purpose. Your description of The Book of Delights really resonates with me—I feel inspired to cultivate more mindfulness and gratitude in daily life. Adding this and When Breath Becomes Air to my reading list.

  10. Of these I’ve only read ‘Tuesdays with Morrie’ and had really liked it. Hoping to check the other ones out soon.
