Cover Page

Designed by Harin Kairali Punnapra , the cover page catches the eye with its bright and lively colours making the book seem like a light and fun read.Unfortunately or intentionally, it gives away nothing about the theme or characters , other than the animated resemblance. The title of the book Ram C/O Anandhi on the cover page has the C/O encapsulated in a pink heart which gives away the theme of romance but that is all you get from the cover page.

Plot Overview

The story follows Ram, a young man from Alleppey, Kerala, who moves to Chennai with the dream of making a name for himself in filmmaking and literature. His plans take an unexpected turn when he encounters Anandhi, a spirited and outspoken receptionist at his college. Their initial clashes soon give way to a complex and delicate relationship that alters the course of their lives. Through their tumultuous romance, the novel ventures into the challenges posed by societal expectations, personal ambitions, and the unpredictable nature of love.

Characters

Dharmajan’s talent lies in his vivid and relatable characters and their interactions. The book has an old world small city charm even though it is based in Chennai city. Ram is portrayed as an idealist dreamer, someone who is deeply passionate about storytelling but also swayed by his feelings. His journey from a simple mannered ambitious student to a man shaped by love and hardship is beautifully compelling.

On the other hand, Anandhi is a refreshingly strong and independent female protagonist. She is not just a pretty face or a mere love interest but a force of her own—fierce, opinionated, and emotionally complex. Her interactions with Ram bring both conflict and warmth, making their relationship one of the novel’s most engaging aspects.

The supporting cast also plays a crucial role in adding depth to the story. From friends who offer undying support and sometimes comic relief to the serious plot to treacherous adversaries who make life harder for the protagonists, each character contributes to the novel’s immersive world.

Themes and Motifs

Love and Passion

Even though Ram C/O Anandhi is a love story—it is neither simple nor predictable. The evolution of Ram and Anandhi’s relationship is marked by both tenderness and turmoil. The book follows , boy meets girl, they fight and then fall in love format but it is an undulating passion.Their journey highlights the blossoming of first love and the struggles that come with it.

Revenge and Consequences

While love drives much of the narrative in Ram C/O Anandhi , the second half of the novel, in a twist to the plot, showcases themes of revenge and its far-reaching consequences. The choices the characters make out of passion or anger have lasting effects, making the reader reflect on the thin line between love and vengeance.

The Third Gender

Worth mentioning is the very sensitive and realistic portrayal of Malli, who belongs to the socially outcast third gender also called ‘Aruvani‘ in Tamil. To me, this was the highlight of the novel. This subplot gives a gravitas to the tender love story.

Loss and Resurgence

Loss is another central theme in the novel. Whether it is Malli’s tragic loss of dreams , or leaving behind your homeland, the characters are constantly evolving in response to the setbacks they face. Ram and Anandhi’s transformation over the course of the story underscores the idea that love and loss can make you stronger.

Friendship and Support Systems

Amidst the emotional highs and lows, friendships provide moments of relief and grounding.Bineesh, Reshma and Vetri , the other lovable characters in Akhil’s story create moments of  laughter and joy while staying loyal to their friend Ram in a new city. The novel highlights the importance of having a support system, particularly in the tumultuous years of young adulthood.

Writing Style and Narrative

The author’s writing is narrative and evocative. Akhil Dharmarajan brings alive Chennai for the reader. The narrative is rich in emotion, drawing readers into Ram’s internal conflicts and Anandhi’s fiery personality. The dialogue feels natural and engaging, making the characters look real and relatable. The plot thickens and the pace grows towards the second half of the novel.Additionally, the setting of Chennai and its vibrant college life add an authentic backdrop to the story.Having been to Chennai, I could relate to many landmarks and cultural practices.

Impact and Reception

Ram C/O Anandhi has achieved massive success in Malayalam literature. It has has already captivated the hearts of thousands of readers. Its English translation allows a broader audience to experience its depth and emotional resonance. While non -Malayali or Tamil readers may find it slightly tough to read it because of the plentiful Malayali and Tamil references, the novel’s exploration of universal themes makes it appealing across cultures and demographics. There is also a glossary but I feel it would have been more useful as a footnote. Who wants to keep going back and forth while reading a book to look up a certain word!

A book that stays with you

Ram C/O Anandhi is a novel that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned. Its narrative strikes a sentimental chord with the reader with its multifaceted characters, and thought-provoking themes. It cannot be slotted as just a love story—it is an exploration of life’s unpredictability amidst socio-political upheavals Whether one is drawn to romance, drama, or stories of self-discovery, this novel is a must-read and deserves to be made into a film.Ram C/O Anandhi  is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, leaving readers with a feeling of nostalgia tinged with a haunting sense of loss.
